Compositions
Project 1: Orange
My piece, Orange, is a soundscape I created. The composition is meant to transport the listeners to a peaceful, serene, natural landscape. The piece features percussion instruments including wind chimes, mallet/world percussion, and ocean sound effects. This has been one of my biggest projects thus far since I was able to bring the piece to life after arranging it to be performed by a live percussion ensemble.

Project 2: Free Form
This was a pretty experimental project for me. Since the assignment gave me the freedom to create whatever I wanted, I chose to try something that I've never done before, which was to create a beat. I experimented with adding plug-ins, specifically reverb. I really like the way the tambourine sounds with everything, and I feel like it adds a lot to the overall "tranquil" feel, as Mr. Carlin described it.

Project 3: Dance Composition
For this project, I was instructed to create an original composition for a dance number. This dance number is meant to reflect the spoken words of inspirational speakers. I wanted this composition to sound very powerful and inspiring. I chose to sample some portions of famous speeches and to create a somber, motivational instrumental accompaniment. I hope the music amplifies the message of each speech, and that it evokes lots of emotion from the listeners.

Project 4: Holiday Composition
This project was assigned just before winter break. I decided to make an instrumental Christmas song for my composition. I attempted to incorporate elements of some traditional holiday jazz tunes that I've listened to into my project. I added a record player sound effect for ambiance. I also recorded the piano part through a keyboard in order to bring a live, organic feel to the track.

Project 6: (Absence of a Film) Score
For this Project, I created a backing track in ProTools that accompanies a live vibraphone performance. I formatted the entire composition in a way that sounds like a story; kind of like a film score but without the film (hence the title). The idea is to explore the relationship between the performer and the audience, and to see how the emotion in which a live performer plays can affect the audience, ultimately allowing the live performance itself to act as the ‘film,’ while the backing track is the score behind it. I used this project as an opportunity to experiment with creating more emotionally appealing compositions that can be left up to the listener’s interpretation.
